Kevin McCaffrey was awarded the St. John Neumann Catholic School Alumni of the Year Award on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at the school's Annual Dinner Auction.

Kevin a St. John Neumann 1998 alumnae was instrumental in helping to publish a children’s book about African students.   The book, “On My Way to School” incorporated themes from a creative writing project done by 61 students at Losinoni Primary School in northern Tanzania.  It describes the children’s long walk to school from their remote village and provides a glimpse into life in Africa for many wishing to receive an education.  The three major student writers contributing to the project each received a goat for their family.

Kevin is a 27-year old who graduated from Harvard University with a degree in economics.  He helped start First Person Publishing which focuses on helping people in need by meeting the people first hand.

On Tuesday, Nov. 30th Kevin McCaffery met with the kindergarten through seventh grade students to discuss his new books, his work with school age children throughout the world, and the importance of his education at SJNCS.
He introduced a book that is currently being reviewed entitled, When Honey the Tiger Flew written by students in Cambodia.  He asked our students to provide feedback to shape the final story to be published later this spring.

The focus of his work is to help improve the education opportunities especially for girls and to increase everyone’s awareness of endangered species. The proceeds from the books help fund education for those children less fortunate.

“On My Way to School” was our back-to-school school-wide reading project.  All our students are either reading the book or having it read aloud to them. They are discussing the book and recognizing the importance one person makes in the life of many.  Kevin has provided a copy of the book for each family.  Kevin truly is a model for our children.
